''It's kind of a cultural phenomenon,'' crows Pfizer chief William C. Steere Jr. ''The aging baby boomer population wants to remain young and is very willing to use drugs that counteract some of the ravages of aging,'' says independent pharmaceutical analyst Jack Lamberton.

''The drug industry is hitting on all cylinders,'' says Cowen & Co. analyst Stephen M. Scala. Viagra sales will hit $2.5 billion by 2001. Prozac, Propecia, Halidol, Xanax, Ritalin and other "lifestyle" drugs. Yet marijuana remains illegal. Go figure. "I am convinced that the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folk are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed."
